If you think you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI), getting assessed and treated quickly can help you get back to your normal routine sooner. Our pharmacy provides a convenient UTI prescribing service in Manly West and surrounding Brisbane suburbs, allowing eligible women to receive assessment and, where appropriate, treatment directly from a specially qualified pharmacist.
Who can access the UTI service?
This service is only available for women aged 18 to 65 years who have symptoms consistent with an uncomplicated UTI and meet the pharmacist’s eligibility criteria.
You may not be eligible if you have a compromised immune system, any urinary tract abnormality, or other medical circumstances that require assessment by a doctor. The pharmacist will ask questions about your symptoms, medical history and medicines before deciding whether pharmacist prescribing is suitable.
If your symptoms suggest a more serious infection or another medical condition, we may recommend that you see your GP or another healthcare professional instead.
What happens during a UTI consultation?
The pharmacist will conduct a private consultation to discuss your symptoms and relevant medical history. This may include questions about urinary frequency, urgency, burning or discomfort when passing urine, abdominal symptoms and other symptoms that could indicate a more serious infection.
If you meet the eligibility requirements and the pharmacist determines that treatment is appropriate, a suitable treatment, including antibiotics, can be provided under the relevant Queensland pharmacist prescribing arrangements. The pharmacist can also provide advice about treatment, symptom management and when to seek further medical attention.
How much does the UTI service cost?
The total cost is approximately $30–$40, depending on the medication required. This price includes the cost of the medication.
At this point in time, government subsidies are not available for this service, including for concession card holders, so the applicable consultation and medication costs are payable by the patient.
